At Lyn Lake Chiropractic, we recognize that children often have a need for chiropractic care. While resilient and quick to heal, children are subjected to numerous factors that can result in injury and illness. The very events of birth and infancy can represent some of our earliest trauma to the spine and nervous system. Toddlers, learning to crawl and walk, are constantly straining and falling. Preschool and elementary-aged children play relentlessly hard and don’t always exercise the best judgment concerning risk. Older children often develop poor posture, engage in physically demanding sports, and face ever-increasing workloads at school.
Our Approach to Children’s Chiropractic Care
We treat children and family members of all ages. As parents ourselves, we want the best for your children, just as we want for our own. We believe childhood should be as free of pain, discomfort, and distress as possible.
Chiropractic care begins with a complete history and physical examination, regardless of the age of the patient. For children too young to communicate their distress, our chiropractors thoroughly explore the history of the child’s condition with the parent. Only after a careful examination, a detailed explanation of your child’s condition, and your consent as a parent, will age-appropriate treatment begin.
Chiropractic Care and Colic
Colic is a condition in young infants characterized by an unusual amount of crying. When they cry, they may draw their arms and legs toward their bodies as though in pain and may even turn bright red. Colic usually appears between the 3rd and 6th week after birth and typically resolves by around 3 months of age. Although no one is certain what causes colic, contributing factors may include an immature and irritated nervous system, food sensitivities, and gastrointestinal upset.
The theory that an irritated spine may contribute to colic is supported by the frequent improvement in symptoms after gentle chiropractic adjustments. Because the birthing process is very stressful on a newborn’s neck, it’s common for there to be subluxations in the neck and back that can irritate the tiny, delicate nervous system.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is chiropractic care safe for children?
Yes. Treatment is age-appropriate and begins only after a thorough history and exam, a detailed explanation of your child’s condition, and your consent as the parent.
What causes children to need chiropractic care?
Everyday events like the birthing process, learning to crawl and walk, active play, sports, poor posture, and school workloads can all place stress on a child’s developing spine and nervous system.
Can chiropractic care help with infant colic?
Some infants with colic show improvement after gentle chiropractic adjustments, particularly when subluxations from the birthing process are contributing to nervous system irritation.
At what age can a child start seeing a chiropractor?
We treat children of all ages, adjusting our approach and technique to be age-appropriate for each child’s stage of development.
What does a first visit for a child look like?
It starts with a complete history and physical exam. For younger children who can’t describe their symptoms, we work closely with the parent to understand the full picture before recommending any treatment.
